Helen Thomas, an 89 year old fixture at White House daily press conferences since the Kennedy administration, was recently unceremoniously removed from (or resigned from) her position. The fact that she no longer occupies the ‘front and center’ seat in the pressroom is not the most amazing fact, but that it took so long for it to happen.
Thomas has unabashedly unleashed a constant stream of hateful attacks against those whom she dislikes, mostly the Jewish race. This self-proclaimed ’progressive’ has never left any doubt that she has no use for people of the Semite persuasion. Her last gasp displayed both her bias and loathing for Jews. While being interviewed by a Rabbi, Thomas stated that Jews should, “…get the ____ out of Palestine...” When asked where the Jews should go, she stated that they should return to Poland, Germany, etc.
This shocking display of both ignorance of history and intolerance resulted in her removal from her lofty post, from whence she has challenged and bashed press secretaries for decades. Her defenders state that many people agree with Thomas. That is true, since there is no shortage of bigots and anti-Semites within our culture. A journalist, however, is supposed to give the appearance objectivity in such matters. Helen was never considered objective when it came to Middle Eastern affairs.
Helen Thomas was reared in the Detroit, Michigan area in a family with Lebanese roots, graduated from Wayne State University, and rose among the ranks of journalists to become the first female White House correspondent. Of late, many other journalists simply winked and smiled at some of her rants against Jews or anyone else whose perspective on the news differed from hers.
She claimed that the area in question has been the Palestinian homeland for centuries. One would have to ignore the Bible in order to believe this. The Old Testament if full of stories about the children of Israel being displaced, moved from their homeland or enslaved, mostly as a consequence of their disobedience to God. Jerusalem has been their capital for many millennium, and ruled by such historical and biblical giants as King David and King Solomon.
To suggest that Jews return to Poland or Germany is an insult. The Jews who left Poland after World War II did so after being rescued from the Holocaust camps. I doubt anyone would want to return to such an existence. Historically, it is clear that, while Israel was chastised by God on many occasions, and sent into bondage in other lands, the Bible declares them to be God’s chosen people.
God has a special covenant with Israel which us non-Jewish people do not understand. We Gentiles, who believe in Jesus Christ, are saved through faith. God warns of His continued love and protection for the Jewish people. The establishment of a Jewish state, with Jerusalem as its capital, following World War II, was nothing short of a miracle. God has further shown His protection of Israel when they repelled an attack from all of their sworn enemies in the region during the 1976 and 1973 wars, which the out-gunned and out-numbered Israeli military won decisively.
No, Helen, Poland and Germany is not ’where they came from…”, but were some of the destinations to which the Jews were scattered. In the book of Jeremiah, God declares, “…He who scattered Israel will gather them and watch over His flock like a shepherd.…” The Israelites were scattered to these countries and beyond, and have been ‘gathered’ together in their ancient homeland by their mighty Protector. Helen Thomas has her opinion, which she may express from the sidelines. It’s not a good idea to bet against Israel.
